A summary of current data on suicide risk and prevention among transgender people in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month Transgender people who need and receive gender-affirming medical care have a lower prevalence of suicide thoughts and attempts than those who need it but have not received it, according to a new fact sheet by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. An estimated 5% of transgender people who accessed gender-affirming care attempted suicide in the past year compared to 9% of those who needed care but did not receive it. Research shows that certain adverse experiences, such as discrimination or violence, are associated with a higher risk of suicide thoughts and attempts among transgender people. In contrast, affirming experiences, such as family and social support, are associated with lower risks.
